DialCatz is a complete API client without AI. If you want help, there are four AI features — and all of them are off until you turn them on. Nothing is sent to an AI provider until you press a button, and each feature sends only what is listed below.
Turn AI on
Open Settings → AI. The page wears the badge Shared with Catzoid apps, because the AI connection is shared:
- Use AI in DialCatz — DialCatz’s own switch. Turning AI on here does not turn it on in DevCatz or DBCatz, and the other way round.
- The provider, model and API key are shared with every Catzoid app on this computer. Set them up once, in any of the apps. See Shared by the Catzoid apps.
Providers
| Provider | Notes |
|---|---|
| Anthropic (Claude) | |
| OpenAI (GPT) | |
| Google (Gemini) | |
| Z.ai (GLM) | |
| DeepSeek | |
| Mistral | |
| xAI (Grok) | |
| Groq | |
| OpenRouter | Many models behind one key |
| Ollama | Runs on your computer, offline; no key needed |
| OpenAI-compatible server | Any server that speaks the OpenAI API |
The connection settings
- Model — pick one, or press Load models to fetch the provider’s current list.
- Address — for Ollama and OpenAI-compatible servers: where the server runs.
- API key — Kept only on this computer in the KeychainWindows’ protected storage (DPAPI), shared with Catzoid apps. The
get one link opens the provider’s key page. Save stores it, Remove deletes it. The key sits in the Keychain item Catzoid AI, never in a settings file. The key is encrypted for your Windows account in
%APPDATA%\Catzoid\keys\<provider>.dpapi, never in a settings file. - Test connection — sends a tiny check to the provider to prove the key and model work.
The feature switches
Below the connection, each feature has its own switch, with a note of what it sends. Turn on only the ones you want.
| Feature | Where it shows up |
|---|---|
| Ask DialCatz (mod+K) | The floating ✦ button, bottom right, and mod+K |
| Explain a response | ✦ Explain in the response’s status bar |
| Write tests | ✦ Write tests above the Tests editor |
| Generate a body | ✦ in the Body bar |
Ask DialCatz
A chat that knows your workspace and can act in it. Open it with the floating ✦ button in the bottom right, or mod+K, which also closes it again.
Ask in plain words, for example:
- Add a request that logs in and saves the token
- Make a Shop API collection with CRUD requests for products
- Check in the database whether the last call saved the row
- Add a staging environment with baseUrl and token
The answer comes with actions you apply with a click:
| Action | Does |
|---|---|
| Add | Adds a request |
| Open | Opens a request |
| Set | Sets a variable |
| Create | Creates a collection, folder or environment |
| Group | Puts collections in a sidebar group |
| Open in DBCatz | Opens a table in DBCatz to check what a call did |
Nothing is added until you click, and nothing is sent until you press Send — Ask DialCatz builds requests, it does not fire them.
Enter sends your message, shift+enter starts a new line and Esc closes the chat. New chat starts over, and Stop cuts an answer short.
What it sends: the names of your collections, folders and requests, their methods and URLs, your variable names (never their values), and the open request without its secrets.
Explain a response
✦ Explain in the response’s status bar asks the AI what a response means. You get a short summary, a Likely cause: when something went wrong, and fixes to try. Most useful on a 4xx or 5xx with a long error body.
What it sends: the method, the URL, the request’s header names (with auth and cookie values masked), the response status, the response headers and the first 12 KB of the response body.
Write tests
✦ Write tests above the Tests editor writes test scripts for the request, using the dc
API. Send the request once first: the AI writes tests from what the response actually looks like.
What it sends: the request and the shape of its last response (the first 12 KB).
Generate a body
✦ in the Body bar writes a request body from a sentence. Type something like a new user with name, email and two addresses (the box shows a similar example) and press Write it. It works for the JSON, Text, XML, Form and Multipart body modes.
What it sends: the method, the URL, the current body and your sentence.
What is never sent
- Variable values and secrets — Ask DialCatz sees only names, and Explain masks auth and cookies.
- Anything at all while AI, or that feature, is switched off.
- Anything before you press the button: there is no background AI.
With Ollama, nothing leaves your computer at all.
What AI does not do in DialCatz
- It does not write Git commit messages.
- It does not describe or document a whole collection.
- It never sends a request by itself.
